Flynn Center's Words Come Alive: Arts|Literacy|Imagination

Words Come Alive is the Flynn’s signature professional development program based on research substantiating the vital importance of the performing arts in learning. Since 2001, through Words Come Alive, classroom teachers have worked in close collaboration with Flynn teaching artists to develop drama and movement techniques that address curricular goals while strengthening students’ expressive skills. Words Come Alive techniques connect with reading, writing, social studies, science, math, social issues, foreign languages, and visual arts, enabling children to become active learners. They become ecosystems, embody poems, and get into the shoes of story characters. They relive the Boston Tea Party and create movement pieces about the Holocaust and child labor. The applications are endless. Words Come Alive is available in stand-alone classroom or teacher workshops, and it is also available as a multi-year, full professional development and arts integration program for classrooms or whole schools.

“When we dance and act out stories, they become a part of us.” This observation from a student sums up what Flynn Center’s Words Come Alive in your classroom is all about: students learning ways to deeply engage in curricular material with dance or theater. By grade level, teachers choose the content and specific learning goals they wish to focus upon, either a topic in history or science, or a novel or picture book(s), or playwriting. They also choose the art form (dance or theater) they wish to see demonstrated. Professional , skilled Flynn teaching artists then create highly interactive student sessions to bring the content to life. Note: Flynn residencies may also center around one of the Flynn Center for Performing Arts ’ nationally and internationally recognized student matinee performances and include a trip to the Flynn Center to witness the chosen live performance.

Words Come Alive residencies emphasize the creative process of learning rather than working towards and refining a product. The Flynn Center aims to empower teachers to use the techniques demonstrated in the residency once the work is complete. To that end, the Flynn highly recommend that a workshop be offered before and/or after residency to the classroom teachers to familiarize them with Words Come Alive! techniques.
