Tape Art

We are the inventors of Tape Art. And we want to draw with you.

As a crew of public artists, we have been operating since 1989. Working in the medium of low-adhesive tape we have created over 500 large-scale temporary public art installations all over the United States and the world. No matter how big the installation, we remove every Tape Art mural within 24 hours of completing it. We consider our interactions with the environment and the public as integral to our art-making.

As educators we have worked with a wide range of communities teaching collaborative art making classes from K-12 workshops all the way up to corporate leadership training off-sites. We have introduced this medium to over 40,000 first-time Tape Artists and continue to be moved by its endless educational applications and possibilities.

In community and healing venues, Tape Art exercises are an opportunity for communities to create art together and have a public voice. To this end Tape Art can play an especially potent role for individuals and communities in the aftermath of loss: on the walls of hospitals and psych wards, or in the wake of tragedy. In our local children’s hospital we did a run of weekly drawings for 17 years in a row.

Ultimately every project is custom designed to fit the needs and budget of the community or organization we are working with. If you are interested in collaborating with us, it is best to contact us so that we can give you a quote based on the type of artwork and engagement you are interested in. Thank you!

I Have Worked With

  • June 2015 to June 2018

In 2015 the Art Allstate program moved from the Worcester Art Museum campus to its current home at UMASS Dartmouth. We have continued our annual mural and artist talk as part of that program and will continue to do so in the years to come. In March of 2018 we partnered with Art Allstate to run a day-long teacher training PD workshop that introduced art teachers from acoss the state to Tape Art as a medium and method and how Tape Art can serve in their classrooms and communities.

  • October 2017

Working with The Citadelle Art Foundation in Canadian, TX, we designed a month-long residency that included a public art campaign of 16 mini-murals throughout the town followed by two weeks of teaching Tape Art workshops in schools around the region. We ran workshops for over 500 students from elementary level to secondary level, including Tape Art stop animation workshops and community service projects that brought high school students to draw in local nursing homes. By the end of the residency everyone in the town had either seen our work or participated in a Tape Art workshop.

  • May 2017 to September 2017

The Brooks Art Museum in Memphis, TN commissioned a massive Tape Art mural to be installed on the outside of their museum building to celebrate their centennial. We spent 20 days on the outside of the museum drawing a beautiful tree filled with women (you can see the Woman Tree mural in the images section of the profile). During that time we worked with the museum to design a residency for us to return in the fall of that year. This residency connected The Brooks to their donors and more importantly the surrounding communities. As part of their annual auction fundraiser, we allowed the museum to sell off blocks of time in our fall residency to donors who could then point us to any place in the community for a mini Tape Art project. The donors chose a range of projects from public murals, to workshops in local schools, to Tape Art experiences for students in the most underserved parts of the city.
