Strawbery Banke Museum (SBM) is an outdoor living history museum established in 1958. Its mission is to share the ongoing history and preservation of a waterfront neighborhood, celebrating the lives of ordinary individuals and the value of community. Within the strategic frameworks of being “A Place to Gather, A Place to Learn, and A Sustainable Community Resource”, SBM preserves a 10-acre neighborhood, home to streetscapes, historic gardens, and original architecture from almost 400 years of settlement for the benefit of the local, regional and national community. The Museum maintains 37 historic structures, eight period gardens, archaeological collections, an archival collection, as well as extensive art and decorative art collections from the period 1653 to 1958. Twenty period buildings are furnished and open to the public. In this authentically restored community, costumed role players interpret the daily lives of ordinary people who lived here -- from Colonial times to World War II -- in engaging and accessible ways.
