The Strand Theatre, located in downtown Rockland on the coast of Maine, has been entertaining audiences since 1923. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater underwent an extensive renovation in 2005, which included new sound and projection equipment, a fully restored interior and exterior, and a bright new marquee.
Today, the Strand Theatre is a multi-use venue offering the best of current first-run and independent films, live musical concerts and comedy, simulcasts, educational programs, conferences, and other special events on our stage and screen.
Film: Our programming includes an on-going regular schedule of current first-release, independent, and documentary film titles. We also offer special film series, the occasional retrospective and classic film, film festivals, and special film events in conjunction with local organizations and partners including the The Camden International Film Festival, The Maine Jewish Film Festival, The Farnsworth Art Museum, and others.
HD Simulcasts: We present a variety of performances broadcast LIVE via satellite including The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD, the National Theatre of London, the Bolshoi Ballet in Cinema, and more.
At the Strand, seeing a movie is also about the experience. We present movies the way they were meant to be seen... on The Big Screen and in the restored beauty of a 1923 classic movie-house. The theater is equipped with state-of-the art projection and Dolby-digital surround sound, and our trained projectionists take great care to give our audience the best movie-going experience possible. Closed captioning and visual-impairment assist devices are available, for the films that are formatted with that technology, to offer a better experience for patrons that are deaf or hard of hearing, or are blind or have low vision. In addition, our concession staff pops some of the best popcorn around!
The Strand Theatre presents a diverse year-round program of live music, comedy, performing arts, and other special events, including the Strand's ongoing concert series of live music featuring some of the finest established and emerging folk, roots, blues, and world music artists from around the globe. Past performers on the Strand stage have included Ani Difranco, Pat Metheny, Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Punch Brothers, Paula Poundstone, the Capitol Steps, LADAMA, Wailin' Jennys, Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra, and more.
The live performance schedule has also grown to include a series of educational and family programs. Family Series artists also provide free student matinees for local schools.
