Sonia Plumb Dance Company (SPDC) was formed in 1990 with a mission “to enrich and educate the community through innovative modern dance,” serving diverse audiences. Programs include seasonal performances, K-12 arts education, community engagement, and classes for college students, professionals and children on the autism spectrum. Artistic Director Sonia Plumb is deeply committed to exploring the cultural, societal, and humanities content of each work, collaborating with fellow artists, educators and scholars to develop robust education and outreach programming. Talkbacks drive reflection. Classrooms come alive when SPDC projects are infused into Common Core science, math and literature curriculum. Student matinees create access for inner-city students, enhance learning and foster arts appreciation. In 2017 SPDC launched a paid Dance Apprenticeship Program. Talented high school graduates lacking socio-economic resources to attend college level dance programs train, teach and perform with SPDC and participate in arts administration activities to promote job preparedness and career development skills.
