Rey Bermudez, Master Cultural Teaching Atist - Latin Dance

“Rey” as most people know him, began his love of Latin/Urban dance and the arts at an early age.  Born to Puerto Rican and Cuban parents, Rey enjoys the best of both worlds as it pertains to the origins of the Salsa music and dance.  As a teen, Rey began expanding his dance repertoire to include Ballroom and Urban dance, as well as studying classic musical theater and stage performances.  Rey is known for his natural ear for music and the ability to mimic movement easily, which has enabled him to develop his unique creativeness and dance style.  He has written, choreographed, and danced in original dance theater productions which include Reflections: Another Romeo and Juliet, Cezar: A Nutty Tale, Alice in Congaland, and is currently working on The Greatest Lie Ever Told: Pinocchio’s Next Adventure.  Over the years Rey has trained and taught with nationally known cultural institutions like Mi Casa, Guakia, and the Artist Collective.

Rey has developed a curriculum based program for teaching Latin dance which has been featured in dance studios, post and secondary schools, community organizations, as well as major companies in Connecticut and Massachusetts.  Rey’s curriculum has also been featured at the University of Connecticut, Storrs as part of a science through dance course titled Physics of Salsa, where students where able to study theories related to force and motion while learning to dance.  Rey has choreographed dances for countless Quinceanera’s and weddings; in addition, he has choreographed pieces for state organizations like the CT Department of Children and Families, university dance teams like Caliente at Wesleyan and classic R&B singers like Ms. Betty Harris.

Currently, Rey is working on developing enrichment programming for youth and families that combine his passion for the arts, Latin music and culture, as well as his professional studies in marriage and family counseling.  His hope is to help families thrive by providing activities that speak to the heart and mind as a means of healing through the arts.  Rey has a B.A. in Human Services, a Master’s in Marriage and Family Counseling, and is a Master Teaching Artist for the Bushnell Theater and Greater Hartford Arts Council.
