Maine Coast Waldorf School - Magic Matinee

For the past fifteen years Maine Coast Waldorf School has hosted Circus Smirkus, the international award-winning traveling youth circus on its Freeport campus. In conjunction with that presentation, Maine Coast Waldorf developed the Magic Matinee Program, which gives underserved youth the opportunity to attend the Circus and take part in circus related workshops and activities. The impact that the Circus’ highly professional young performers - on the trapeze, highwire, as clowns, jugglers and acrobats - have on their audience can be life changing: kids inspiring kids in a deeply meaningful and joyful way. Magic Matinee also funds two summer camp scholarships that provide a week long immersion in circus arts where kids not only develop physical skills, but qualities of self discipline and other life-long lessons. The camp may provide the inspiration many of these youth need. The program has sought out groups with children who have challenges – physical, emotional, or financial - and offered them V.I.P. perks, backstage tours, and workshops. The Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour in Freeport also spotlights the many associated events Maine Coast Waldorf offers such as workshops and classes in clowning, acrobatics, mime, theater, and juggling. AN EDUCATION BOTH TIMELESS AND TIMELY. Founded in 1984 as Merriconeag Waldorf School, Maine Coast Waldorf serves some 250 students from early childhood through high school. The mission of the school is to awaken the highest potential in every student by fostering clarity of thought, warmth of heart, and strength of resolve to make a difference in the world. Between our early childhood-8th grade campus in Freeport and our high school at Pineland Farms, our students take advantage of acres and acres of outdoor classrooms and woodland trails. The curriculum at Maine Coast Waldorf School inspires a lifelong love of learning. Developed by visionary Rudolf Steiner more than a century ago, the Waldorf educational method is now used in more than 900 schools in 83 countries. Here, the academic is made tangible through play, social interaction, integrated studies and first-hand experiences. These approaches have consistently been shown to be effective in research on brain development, and by generations of vibrant Waldorf alumni. Maine Coast brings Waldorf to life with a strong sense of place. The storied forests, fields, shores and towns of coastal Maine are the arenas where our students learn and thrive.
