Lizzy Fox

I am a poet and educator with an MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Fascinated by the intersections of poetry, performance, and mindfulness, I teach creative writing workshops, help students prepare for public readings, and have led courses on poetry as a spiritual (nonreligious) practice. I've also been known to direct school plays and curate original student performance pieces. I'm based in Vermont and have taught in partnership with the Vermont Arts Council, Flynn Arts, The New England Young Writers Conference, VSA Vermont, and countless schools. I work with all ages and will travel throughout the region. Some of my courses are also available online. In general, for in-person workshops and residencies I charge $250/day. This is a negotiable rate and does not account for travel costs.

In addition to teaching, I book public readings. My poems have received the Laura J. Spooner Prize and the Corrine Eastman Davis Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of Vermont and have appeared in journals, anthologies, and art displays.

I Have Worked With

  • January 2019

    Since 2014, I've served as a Guest Artist for the Poetry Out Loud program. In January and February (primarily) of each year, I coordinate with participating high schools and facilitate poetry recitation workshops with competitors ranging from groups of 5 to 60 students. I guide students to select and understand the poems they are reciting, identify key public speaking skills, and practice communicating their poem's meaning and feeling to an audience. In 2017, I also coached Vermont's State Champion for for the national Poetry Out Loud competition.

    In 2018 I joined the VAC's Teaching Artist Roster, through which I was awared an Artists in Schools grant to bring a four-day Mindfullness Poetry residency to Montpelier High School. 

  • December 2014 to February 2018

    In the 2014-2015 school year, I wrote and directed an original elementary school play based on Chinese folktales to dovetail with the Schoolhouse Learning Center's cultural studies unit. 

    In the 2017-2018 school year, I edited and directed an original play written by Schoolhouse elementary school students and focused on the school's year-long theme of Identity. 

    In both instances, I cast all elementary school students (K-5th grade), developed roles for participating preschool students, and organized volunteer middle school students in tech and supporting roles. I managed all rehearsals, oversaw the vision and implementation of sets, costumes, props, lighting, and sound. Most importantly, I supported students to develop skills in public speaking, character development, and teamwork while exploring the school's larger themes of study.

  • September 2017 to December 2017

    In partnership with WonderArts, I designed and facilitated two 10-week enrichment poetry classes for 7th and 8th grade students at Craftsbury Academy. I also led a half-day outdoor writing workshop for adults in which we created poems inspired by nearby Caspian Lake.
