Erik Nielsen

I am a professional composer available for creating new works of almost any type. I am also an experienced teacher/mentor in composition, now in my 15th year as Senior Mentor with Music-COMP (formerly the Vermont MIDI Project), a program that helps young people create their own music, as well as a Juried Teaching Artist on the Vermont Arts Council Teaching Artist Roster. I am available for residencies, new works on commission, curriculum and professional development, as well as specializing in creating new works for weddings and other special occasions. In addition, as a Touring Artist I am available for performances of my opera, "A Fleeting Animal", presented by my production company, Right Here Productions.

  • January 2016

I received a Creation Grant from the Vermont Arts Council in September 2015 to create a new work for bassoon and piano for William Short, co-principal bassoon of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Bryan Wagorn, pianist and assistant conductor at the Met. The work received its New York premier November 15, 2016.

  • September 2015

I worked with TURNmusic and their director, Anne Decker, in the revival of my opera, A Fleeting Animal, in September 2015. TURNmusic was the instrumental ensemble in the orchestra pit for the six performances of the work.

  • December 2013

A Far Cry commissioned a new work from me. I also received a Creation Grant from the Vermont Arts Council for the same project. The work, Glimpses of Azure, received its premiere performances December 7, 2013 at St. John's Church, Jamaica Plain, MA and December 8, 2013 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
