Elena Demyanenko

Elena Demyanenko is a Russian-born graduate of the Academy of Theatrical Arts (Moscow). Elena came to NYC in 2000 to work as guest artist with Riverdance on Broadway and, after the show closed in 2001, chose to remain in the city performing and choreographing. Elena was a member of Trisha Brown Dance Company from 2009-2012 and Stephen Petronio Company from 2003-2008. Among the many performances with those companies, she appeared at the New York Live Arts (NYC), Dance Umbrella Festival (London), The Joyce Theater (NYC), San Francisco Performances, UCLA Live!, New Art New Mexico, UC Santa Barbara, and the Dublin International Dance Festival.

Early in 2009 Elena performed in the Martha Clarke production Garden of Earthly Delights at Minetta Lane Theater. That same year she assisted Trisha in creating aerial work for her new opera Pygmalion.

In 2010 Elena was honored to receive a Jerome Robbins Fellowship for the creation of new work and, in January 2011, she premiered Disparate Bodies at the Baryshnikov Arts Center with Joe Poulson. In September 2011 Elena was invited as guest artist to perform Continuous Replay with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company marking the opening of New York Live Arts.

Elena has taught internationally and localy including Montpellier Danse Festival (France), Danscentrum (Stockholm), Theatre National de Chaillot (Paris), TSEH (Moscow), Movement Research, Dance New Amsterdam, Center for Performance Research, Harkness Center for Dance, Baryshnikov Arts Center, University of Utah, and Bennington College.

In addition to her work as performer and teacher, Elena has continued to develop her interest in dance film. In 2007 she was the recipient of an EMPAC Dance Movies Commission as well as being nominated for the 2009 Dance on Camera Jury Prize for her work on Kino Eye. Her second dance film Vienna was screened at the opening of the New Galapagos Art Space in 2008.

Elena is currently making dances with Pavel Zustiak, Kota Yamazaki, Joseph Poulson, Lindsey Dietz Marchant, Dai Jian and Jimena Paz in addition to developing her solo projects. Her work has been presented internationally at the Architecture of Movement Festival in Yaroslavl, Russia, and at various venues throughout New York, including: Movement Research at Judson Church, Dance New Amsterdam, Dixon Place, the WOW Theater, Red Bean Studios and New York Live Arts. Currently, Elena is preparing for her New York Live Arts premier in February 2014.
