African Art Workshop

Segun Olorunfemi is a classically trained artist from Ibadan, Nigeria. Listed in “Who’s Who of Nigerian Art” published by Smithsonian institute, Washington DC.

He has Over 25 years' experience in various arts media such as Yarn Painting, Sand Painting, Linoleum Block Print on Fabric, Batik on Fabric and Batik on rice-paper, Oil Painting and Graphics. He teaches workshops in various medium through the lens of African culture.

He also has 20 years' experience working with people with disabilities through the arts. He served as Affiliate Director of VSA arts organization in Nigeria representing and advocating for people with disabilities.

Traditional Yoruba culture reflects a constant awareness of life as a sacred presence in the world. Segun's workshop creates opportunities for students and teachers to explore stories and traditions illustrated in his work.  Participants develop a vocabulary of images for inclusion in a collaborative class project. The creative process generates interaction and consideration of cross-cultural concepts found in African proverbs and daily life.

Workshops and residencies include examples of Segun's work illustrating fables, stories and festivals drawn from Yoruba and other Nigerian cultures.
The creative process involves free exchange and cross-cultural exploration in a structured studio environment fostering collaboration

I Have Worked With

  • March 2015

    I did Sand painting residency titled "My community"  with 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students and created a 4' X 8' collaborative Sand painting mural that is now on permanent display in the lobby of the school.

  • December 2014

    Linoleum printmaking residency with 6th grade students. The focus was African design and symbols. Students were able to understand printmaking technique without the use of printing press.

  • September 2014

    I worked at Making Community Connection Charter School (MC2) as a visual art teacher for 2 years from 2012 to 2014.
