David Hurwitz Originals

A true craftsman, David Hurwitz designs and builds contemporary furniture pieces, one at a time at his studio in central Vermont, using hand carving along with traditional methods of furniture construction and joinery. His work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums throughout the United States, including the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Delaware Art Museum, the Wharton Esherick Museum and the Bennington Museum. His work is in public and private collections throughout the United States, and in private residences in Canada and England.

David has been doing woodworking since the age of six, and has been a professional woodworker since 1988. He has a BFA (1992) in woodworking and furniture design from the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York. David has been a self-employed furniture maker since 1993.

David has been the recipient of several awards and honors in Vermont and beyond. In January, 2014, he received the Vermont Woodworker of the Year Award by the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association.  His work has been featured in design books and magazines both regionally, nationally and internationally.

I Have Worked With

  • I have collaborated with Randolph, Vermont multi-media artist Phil Godenschwager, combining his custom stained glass work with carved wood in custom lighting.  We also collaborated with LEDdynamics (also based in Randolph) on that project.  They are an LED lighting engineering and manufactuing company, and they provided the engineering expertise and hardware for a custom LED system for our project.  Phil and I plan to work on more ligting collaborations combining wood and glass in the future.

  • I have been teaching classes in business practices and marketing for artists and artisans at the Vermont Woodworking School (Fairfax, VT) since 2011.   Some of those classes have also been held through Burlington College (Burlington, VT), which VWS is affiliated with.
