Catherine Stewart

Catherine Stewart grew up in Scotland, and moved to the Seacoast of New Hampshire in 2012. She graduated in 2008 from the University of Leeds with a BA Honours in Theatre and Performance. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing (Dramatic Writing) at Goddard College. She has developed her practice as part of the 2018 Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab, and as a 2019 Creative Community Fellow at National Arts Strategies.  In late 2019 she became the Artistic Director of New Hampshire Theatre Project, an applied theatre company founded in 1988 and based at its 50-seat blackbox theatre in Portsmouth NH. She is currently in the inaugural cohort for Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process Certification, and Company One’s PlayLab Unit.

Inquiry drives the creation of Catherine’s multidisciplinary theatre that aims to ignite social, economic and political change. As an applied theatre practitioner she works with communities to articulate a challenge, problem or necessary exploration. She then leads theatrical processes, as a playwright, director or facilitator, that grapple with finding answers. Her full-length plays include Extras Wanted, Wish You Were Here, At The Table, and She Will Lead. Her one-act play Over The Fence was the winner of the 2017 30 Pages in 30 Days competition produced by Prescott Park Arts Festival. Her play You, Me and the Woodsmoke is currently in development with Tablework Press, based in New York City and She Will Lead is in development workshops with humanmachine theatre ensemble, based in Atlanta, Georgia.
