Aniruddha Knight and Ensemble perform as contemporary art a unique, hereditary style of the South Indian music and dance form known as bharata natyam. Critically acclaimed in India and the US for their powerful performance in concert, Knight and his ensemble also present compellingly the process of making music with dance and the improvisational nature of the practice that distinguish this family's style.
Ani Knight is the only grandchild of the world-famous dancer T. Balasaraswati, and 9th generation interpreter of the music and dance repertoire of one of South India's most famous families of performing artists. He is also American, bicultural, and the first male dancer in his family. Knight and his accompanists, distinguished vocal and instrumental musicians trained by Balasaraswati and other senior artists in the family, carry forward the discipline, expressiveness, and extemporaneous ensemble performance that are the unique hallmarks of this highly-evolved hereditary style.
