The Record Co.

Every Music Maker. No Barriers.

The Record Co. (TRC) is a non-profit community music workspace designed to serve all Bostonians. Young and old, professional artists and music hobbyists, rock ‘n’ rollers and jazz aficionados (and every genre in between!)—our facility offers ALL music makers the opportunity to produce high-quality creative materials on their own terms.

Founded in 2010 by Berklee College of Music graduate Matt McArthur, TRC is on a mission to remove the technical and social barriers between Greater Boston music makers and their creative visions through truly affordable music workspace and equitable professional development programs.

Our longest-running and most recognizable service is offering subsidized, affordable access to our two, commercial-grade recording studios. Currently, we are operating at maximum capacity,  hosting more than 1,400 recording sessions for over 3,750 unique community users annually. TRC provides workspace with equipment and infrastructure only—we invite music makers to employ their own creative and technical staff. This format is unique in our market. It gives music makers the ability to vet and hire according to their own specifications, and it offers a venue for recording engineers and music producers to build and run their own freelance businesses.

After seven years of steady growth in TRC’s base of community users, the demand for our services has overwhelmed our existing resources. Put simply, Greater Boston’s need for commercial-grade music-making space is too big, and our facility is too small.  Over the next few months, we will transition from our current, 5,000-square-foot facility to a 12,500-square-foot space located at our same address in Boston’s Newmarket Industrial District.

Our new space will house 19 rooms—four recording studios and 15 soundproof suites with a complement of musical instruments and amplification, which can be used flexibly. High-quality music making demands a specific type of environment, and we have designed the suites so that they can accommodate a wide range of audio activities, including rehearsing, podcasting, and providing music instruction, among other uses. In addition, our new space will have a large, multi-functional area that can transform into a small venue for internally and externally developed music events and programming. Additionally, we have created communal areas, where musicians, freelancers, and community members from different genres and geographic regions of the city can run into one another, meet, and collaborate.

The chief motivator behind TRC’s expansion is our desire to serve the great diversity of music makers who come to our door. Our new, larger facility will not only support an increased number of users, but will also enable us to reach a more diverse demographic in terms of age, race, economic background, and creative goals.
