Maine Wooden Buoys

Maine Wooden Buoy is a small Maine-based business operated by James and Kimberly Richards.  We specialize in making Maine cedar lobster pot buoys - just like Maine lobstermen used to use before Styrofoam buoys of today.

We offer a variety of products:

  • Small (14 inch)  and large (21 inch) buoys
  • Small (9 inch)  and large (13 inch) centerpiece buoys (buoys without tails)
  • Large (21 inch) plant pot buoys - regular buoys with a 4 inch hole for plant pot

All buoys are available in natural cedar, polyurethane gloss, painted gloss and painted stressed and with either a 100% leather strap or a hole drilled for rope.

James, a 4th generation Maine lobsterman, learned to make wooden buoys by watching and helping his grandfather, also a Maine lobsterman.  The buoys were almost always cut by hand with a draw shave and a 100% leather strap was nailed to the top of the buoy for the rope to be placed.  Each lobsterman painted their buoys in certain personally chosen colors to identify their lobster traps from other lobstermen.
