My name is Julie Sorcek, and I am a musician and music teacher. I began playing flute when I was 10, and have been playing ever since. I played in high school and college symphonic bands, as well as with the Danbury Community Orchestra. I started playing saxophone during my high school stage band days - I currently play soprano, alto and tenor sax in various settings. I also play ukelele, clarinet and most recently, violin/fiddle.
I am a founding member of and play with the contra dance bands Wry Bred and The Reel Thing. With these bands, I have played at the major Connecticut contra dances including the HCD dance in Wethersfield, the NHCD dance in New Haven, the Round Hill dance in Stamford, the Quiet Corner Contra Dance in Storrs, the Mystic contra dance, and the former Danbury dance. Wry Bred has also played for contra dances in the Northeast, including the Swingin' Tern dance in East Hanover, NJ, the Hudson Valley contra dance in Poughkeepsie, NY, the Downtown Amherst contra dance in Amherst, MA, and the East Bay contra dance in Warren, RI. Wry Bred did a tour to Tennessee and North Carolina with caller Bill Fischer in February, 2011, where we played for contra dances with the Jonesborough, Asheville, Winston-Salem, Charlotte and Durham contra dance groups. I have been a guest musician with the contra dance bands Jane's Gang and Out on a Whim at other contra dances and events. As a member of the band Groovemama, I have performed at the Old Songs and Philadelphia Folk Festivals, where I worked to teach young musicians to play traditional music as part of the Great Groove Band.
I perform on flute and vocals with the Celtic and Americana folk trio Chicks 'n Sync. We have performed at area restaurants and coffeehouses, have also been featured at the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center, and have also played for the Quiet Corner Contra Dance in Coventry, the Mystic contra dance, and the Downtown Amherst contra dance. I perform with singer and guitarist Rio Soren as Rio & the UBC, which does oldies rock and pop songs for area restaurants and private venues. I sing and play with two duos for area nursing homes, assisted living centers and open mikes: Nan and Julie is comprised of Nancy Northrop on vocals and guitar, and me on harmony vocals and flute - we sing songs from older times, show tunes, and seasonal songs for our audiences. Fluke is comprised of Wendy Matthews on ukulele and vocals, and me on vocals and flute - we sing standards, cowboy songs, some pop, Latin jazz songs, and have very tight harmonies together.
I perform on a regular basis with other area musicians in the greater Danbury, CT area, including being a part of the renowned Fiddlers Brawl. I retired in 2015 as the concert band and guitar ensemble director at Immaculate High School in Danbury.
Please contact me to discuss your event or venue. Whether you are looking for ambient instrumental background music for a wedding ceremony, cocktail hour or open house, or a livelier program with engaging songs with vocals, I can tailor a program to fit your needs. It could be solo or duet flute music, or other instrumental (fiddle/violin, keyboard, ukulele, hammered dulcimer, guitar, or concertina) or vocal arrangements with one or more musicians accompanying me. I provide contra dance, Celtic, 18th century colonial, folk, old-time, rock, pop, jazz and classical music for your enjoyment.
