The Historical Society of Cheshire County (HSCC) in Keene was founded in 1927 and is the state’s only county-level historical group. It serves individuals in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, with exhibits, educational programs, and archives, which preserve local history; genealogists and historians who use its valuable research collection; and local, town historical societies in Cheshire County with information and technical support that is rarely available to volunteers at the town level. HSCC maintains a valuable Revolutionary War-era building, the Wyman Tavern, as a period house museum that is used extensively by educators to enrich local history curricula. It also maintains a second historical structure, the Ball Mansion, an 1870 Italianate home on Main Street in Keene that houses its library, offices, and exhibits. The Historical Society has more than 900 members, and 100 volunteers are regularly involved.
