Billy Dean Thomas

Billy Dean Thomas has been described as “a blend between The Roots, rage against the machine and Run The Jewels.” Billy Dean Thomas, AKA “The Queer B.I.G” is a Hip-hop lyricist and musician born and raised in Harlem, but currently residing in Boston. Billy challenges the hip-hop game with polyrhythmic flows that weave together stories of their NYC upbringing , intersectinoal feminism and critique of today’s political and social landscape.

Billy’s nomadic lifestyle and natural ability to bridge genres has allowed them to perform with musicians across the country over a range of styles from punk, grime to classical and trap music. Billy’s goal as a songwriter with the mind of a composer is to continue building a vast community of  musicians to transform         their digitally produced ideas into live instrumentation. After being featured on NPR’s Transom and ABC’s The View, they began a debut tour throughout New England, playing at festivals such as Grand Point North, Harlem Arts Festival and The Brooklyn Museum.

Recently they have completed an artistic residency in Boston to complete a full length project titled “Rocky Barboa” which they recorded in Paris and Berlin. Rocky Barboa uses boxing as an extended metaphor to discuss the reality of being a queer person of color in the male dominated hip hop arena. They have come out of the gate firing with an innovative sophomoric album which intends to provide a sense of strength and community for queer people of color, globally.
