Bill Evans Dance

Bill Evans is an independent dancer (modern and rhythm tap), choreographer, teacher, movement analyst and writer, who moved from western New York to Providence, Rhode Island in 2014.
The Bill Evans Dance Company has appeared in all 50 states, throughout Mexico and Canada, and has taken Mr. Evans to 24 other countries. BEDCO has appeared at the American Dance Festival, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and many international dance festivals in Latin America, Europe and Australia.
Evans was formerly artistic director of Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers and the Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers and has served as a permanent guest artist there for the past 23 years.
Evans founded the Bill Evans Summer Institute of Dance in 1977. He has held Bill Evans Teachers Institutes annually since 1999, in such locations as Franklin, Massachusetts; Cambridge, Massachusetts (at the Dance Complex); Albuquerque, Seattle, Port Townsend, Washington; Indianapolis; Fort Worth; Las Cruces, New Mexico; Moraga, California;, Brockport, New York; Geneva, New York; Puebla, Mexico; Edinburgh, Scotland; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; and Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.
He has been awarded with several fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and received the only Choreography Fellowship from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts in 2015. He has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Dance Education Organization, the American Dance Guild and Dance Teacher Magazine and an honorary doctorate from the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. He was named one of three favorite world tap dancers in the Dance Magazine Readers’ Poll. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah and the Post-Secondary Outstanding Dance Educator Award from the New York State Dance Education Association. He has served as a Fulbright Specialist in residencies in Guatemala and Costa Rica. He received the second Outstanding Service Award ever bestowed by the National High School Dance Festival and was the third recipient of the Honorary Member Award by the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. He was named National Dance Association Scholar Artist in 1997. He has served on the boards of the National Dance Association, the National Dance Education Organization and the American College Dance Festival Association. He has served as ACDA adjudicator and/or guest artist many, many times since 1980. He has hosted three ACDA conferences and assisted in the hosting of two others.
He celebrated his 76th birthday in April with solo concerts in Providence, his home since 2014, culminating a year-long tour of performances in Cambridge, Winnipeg, Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Rochester and Seattle.
Evans is professor emeritus at the College at Brockport, SUNY and distinguished professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico. In May, 2016, he completed a two-year artist’s residency in the Palladino School of Dance, Dean College, Franklin, Massachusetts—site of BETI and Somatic Dance Conference gatherings in 2015. He danced, choreographed and served as artistic coordinator with Repertory Dance Theatre from 1967 through 74, and has since created or reconstructed 19 works for that company, including a commission celebrating RDT’s 50th anniversary that premiered in November 2015.
