Art Monastery

The Art Monastery seeks to create world-class art by applying monastic principles to art-making instead of religion. We are transforming a farm in southern Vermont into a monastery -- an ART monastery -- an international non-profit arts production center steeped in monastic practices. The Art Monastery cultivates personal awakening and cultural transformation through contemplation, creativity, and community. Our programs include:

  • Artmonk Retreats (weeklong silent meditation retreats aimed at strengthening connection to creative spirit),
  • Wellness Getaways (weeklong retreats aimed at total rejuvenation for body, heart, and soul), and
  • the Art Monastic Laboratory (a 10-week intensive during which we create a multidisciplinary theater piece).
  • Artists-in-Residence stays
  • Worktrade stays

We meditate every morning. We cook, clean, and grow our food together. We sing as much as possible. We offer each other creative feedback and support each other in our creative and contemplative practices. We put on shows. We eat dinner around the fire about once a week. We swim in the Connecticut River at least once a day. We observe regular rituals and ceremonies (Full Moon, New Moon, Solstices, and Equinoxes). We observe periods of silence. We are, at other times, raucous. We laugh a lot. We work hard and play hard. We spend a lot of time outdoors. We have a cat.
