Aristides Rivas

Venezuelan born cellist Aristides Rivas leads a versatile musical career, combining different performing and educational projects. Rivas has been nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2010 as part of recording of Sounding Point by Julian Lage and featured on the Boston Globe Magazine as one of Boston leading international artist. He has an active schedule performing a combination of recitals, solos with orchestra, chamber music, and as an orchestral player. He is the principal cello at the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Massachusetts. Aristides has also collaborated with artists such as multi Grammy winner and Jazz Legend Paquito D’Rivera and World-renowned guitarist Julian Lage. Rivas is also a founding member of the world-folk music group Voci Angelica Trio, which tours internationally promoting cultural understanding and world peace.

Rivas has taught extensively and internationally throughout his career, giving master classes, private lessons, coaching and conducting string ensembles, and giving workshops. Some of the places he has visited as a teacher include the Vivace Vilnius International Music Festival in Lithuania, Skidmore College in New York, Stanford University in California,Fundación Musical Simon Bolivar (El Sistema) in Venezuela, the Sejong Dream Tree Youth Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea, and Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes in Mexico, among others. Rivas has appeared as a performer at a wide variety of venues, ranging from orphanages and centers for the mentally disabled to concert halls such as the Barbican in London, Carnegie Hall and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. He believes that music has the power to enrich peoples’ lives and he strives to make a difference in the world through music. Aristides Rivas received his Bachelors degree from Baylor University and a Masters in Music from the New England Conservatory of Music.

    On December 6th, 2015, the Ari & Victor Duo presented a lecture recital at the Weston Public Library. The program was based on a compilation of compositions written by South American composers for cello and piano. Throughout the recital, the Duo shared their insight about the composers, the culture ingrained in the music and the their personal connection to these compositions.  

  • November 2015

    On November 14 of 2015 I had the honor of giving a talk and performance as one of the featured speaker of the 2015 TEDx Beacon Street conference. The organization approached me after performing a fundraiser in the summer of 2015. The topic was a auto biography about how I survived poverty and the danger of becoming a drug criminal thanks to the power of music. More especifically, with the help of many people that were part of an organization in Venezuela called El Sistema.

  • August 2015

    For the past two summers, I have been both a faculty and featured performing artist at the Vivace Vilnius Music Festival in the city if Vilnius, Lithuania. Located at the heart of the Baltic region, the festival attracts young talents from acros Europe and the US to take an intensive training in solo and chamber music. The chamber music series happens over the course of one week at various museums throughout the city of Vilnius.
