Hailed for "beautiful phrasing, consummate duet passages,"” the duo “2” (Peter H. Bloom, flute and Mary Jane Rupert, piano and harp) have performed together for 25 years, appearing in venues across the globe, with CDs on Navona, Ravello Records and North Star. They've been called "the very best players playing at the height of their powers" (University of Canberra, Australia). Grammy-nominated mezzo-soprano D'Anna Fortunato is a frequent guest artist; Fortunato and "2" perform across the United States. Peter H. Bloom tours internationally; is featured on 40 recordings (Sony Classical, Dorian, Newport Classic, others); is a winner of the American Musicological Society’'s Noah Greenberg Award; serves on the faculty of the Snow Pond Composers Workshop; is contributing editor for Noteworthy Sheet Music. The Boston Globe called his music "“a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength."” Acclaimed as a concert pianist and harpist, Mary Jane Rupert has given recitals from Carnegie Hall to Beijing Concert Hall and has appeared with orchestras and chamber ensembles across the U.S. She holds a BM in Piano from Oberlin College; MM in Piano, MM in Harp, DM in Piano Performance from Indiana University. Violist Frank Grimes joins the duo "2" in their trio Ensemble Aubade (flute, harp and viola). "2" performs wide ranging repertoire from masterworks to new music. Composers frequently join the duo in residencies and educational outreach to discuss recent works. Thomas Hill, clarinet, and other musicians join Duo "2" in diverse collaborations.

I Have Worked With

  • Bach to the Future, a wide-ranging program for flute, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo with piano and harp.  On campus residency included master class with flute students and Q&A session with students following the concert. September 2013.

  • Concert featuring the world premiere of Between Heaven and Earth by Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen, written for "2", plus the Asian premiere of Elizabeth Vercoe's Kleemation.  Narong and Vercoe both attended the concert.  While in Thailand, the duo "2" gave concerts and classes at universities, colleges and middle schools, organized by the U.S. State Department and facilitated by DM Studios of Bangkok. January 2009.

  • Music by U.S. and New Zealand composers, including the Australian premiere of Elizabeth Vercoe’s Kleemation.  Duo "2" was praised by Dr. David Tattersall (music chair) as "The very best players playing at the height of their powers…able to communicate the inner depth and meaning, the imagination of the music." March 2012.

Stage 10 x 10 for flute and piano or flute and harp; 12 x 12 when piano and harp are both used and/or when ensemble includes guest artists.

Harp requires hard surface (wood, stone, etc).
